Spirularin

Our Story – Aesthetikonzept

Our Story

Science that
helps people.

From the New Zealand oceans to clinics
across Australia and New Zealand,
the story behind Spirularin & the values that drive it.

Where it all began

Born from the oceans.
Refined by science.

The story of Spirularin begins not in a laboratory, but in the ocean and it has a connection to New Zealand that goes back nearly half a century.

In 1978, a small research company called Ocean-Pharma began exploring the therapeutic potential of marine ingredients, starting with the New Zealand green-lipped mussel and Omega-3 fatty acids. Decades of research followed, eventually leading to a remarkable discovery: a microalgae called Arthrospira platensis, and a patented active extract from it called Spiralin.

After the Spiralin manufacturing process was patented in 2014, a range of unique, science-backed products were developed under the Spirularin brand initially for podiatrists and medical cosmetics studios. The results were extraordinary: broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection, anti-inflammatory properties, and cell-regenerative benefits, all from a single natural extract.

Today, as the exclusive importer of Spirularin for Australia and New Zealand, we are proud to bring this science home to the very part of the world where the journey began.

2018
Ocean-Pharma joins the Cesra family

German pharmaceutical group Cesra acquires Ocean-Pharma, bringing Spirularin into a family of science-led brands united by a single extraordinary purpose.

“Our passion is to help people through our products, and through everything our success makes possible.”
Cesra Arzneimittel, founded 1929
More than a pharmaceutical company

The Redel Foundation
science in service of humanity.

What makes Cesra truly extraordinary is not just the quality of its science. It is what happens to the profits.

In the 1980s, the successors to Cesra’s founder made a remarkable decision: rather than distribute the company’s profits to shareholders or family members, they would channel them entirely into charitable causes. In 1988, the Redel Foundation was established for exactly this purpose and today, the Foundation is the owner of Cesra itself.

What this means in practice: Every time a Spirularin product is purchased anywhere in the world, the profits flow back through Ocean-Pharma to Cesra, and from Cesra to the Redel Foundation supporting people in need due to disasters and emergencies, worldwide. No shareholders. No individual profit. Just science and generosity.

1929
Cesra founded in Baden-Baden

Nearly a century of pharmaceutical science, always guided by the founding motto: “to help people.”

<1%
Administrative cost ratio

The Redel Foundation operates with less than 1% administrative costs one of the most efficiently run charitable foundations in Germany.

0
Shareholders or personal beneficiaries

No individual, family, or external party benefits from Cesra’s profits. The Foundation board operates independently, free from outside influence.

∞
Reinvested in doing good

Profits not distributed to charitable projects are reinvested in Cesra’s future which in turn grows the Foundation’s capacity to do more good over time.

The Foundation is supervised by the Karlsruhe Regional Council and operates with full transparency. Its focus is on supporting people affected by disasters and emergencies from the Ahrtal flooding in Germany to projects across the globe.
