1. Hydrate from the inside out – with pure water
While this is an obvious one, and most people know to keep well hydrated – I am still regularly surprised, by clients coming to my clinic who do not drink enough pure water. On average we need 2 ½ litres of water per day. Close to 1 litre comes from our food (fresh fruit & veg, but also yoghurt, tofu and soy milk are water rich). So, to avoid dehydration and keep our body balanced, we have to drink a minimum of 1 ½ litre of pure water. All other drinks like teas, coffee, fruit juices should not replace pure water, as they include other components that negate the valuable cleansing & detoxifying effects of water.

3. Seek the shade – to avoid “invisible” sun-damage
Did you know that there are different types of solar/sun radiation? Apart from light & heat, the ultraviolet (UV) rays should be of particular interest to us, as these are high energy, hugely active and potentially harmful. UV rays come in two variations: UVA & UVB. UVB rays are responsible for “visible damage” – i.e. tanning & sunburn. UVA rays do not carry as much energy, but reach deeper layers of our skin – causing ageing & cancers. While UVB levels are usually at their highest between 10am-4pm, and stronger in summer, they are stopped by glass. Whereas UVA rays can even pass through glass/windows, and are around all day, even during winter – so the only escape is real shade.

4. Get the right amount of UVA & UVB (sun) exposure
In recent times there has been much discussion about how much sun we should be getting. After people spent years lathering themselves in baby oil, to “bake” in the sun all day long, things went to the other end of the spectrum of people not getting enough sunlight (UVB-rays). UVB-rays are necessary for our bodies to produce Vitamin D. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) if you are fair-skinned, just 5-15 minutes in a tank top & shorts in midday sun is enough.

5. Keep cool as… a pineapple:
“Stand tall, wear a crown & be sweet on the inside” – we had to have one not so serious tip in here now didn’t we?! 🙂 But in case you need a “serious” reason: according to Medical News Today, eating one cup worth of pineapple will give you 131% of your recommended daily vitamin C intake. Vitamin C in turn is highly beneficial for skin as it can reverse damage caused by the sun and pollution, reduce wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture. Vitamin C also plays a vital role in the formation of collagen, the support system of the skin.
